putting back the pieces

Love Swing by Exene Cervenka, 2008 Mixed Media

Last night, while I was beginning my post (which was never published as a result of the events that I am about to describe), my roommate, V, came home and started telling me about a project he had to do for his finance class. It was a self portrait in three parts; past, present, and future, done using collage methods.

We had so much fun putting it together, this is what we came up with:

Past (the birdcage)

(Inside of the cage)

Present (smoking lion)

Future (City)
If you'd like to do this project with your students (this would be great for a middle school class!) This was the assignment:

-Using 3 8.5'x11' substrates, create a collage that represents your past (5 years ago), your present, and your future (5 years from now).

So, in honor of collage art, here are some artists who use collage methods to create their work:

& of course, Joseph Cornell (one of my personal favorites- though he is an assemblage artist and not a collage artist...)

See you tomorrow!
