Get ready to throw your old favorite artist out of the window, because Ralph Helmick and Stuart Schechter (who was trained as a rocket scientist) really blow installation art out of the water! They had a beautiful piece installed at the North Carolina Museum of Art, and it was absolutely a full-fledged feast for my senses when I saw it:
They create suspended sculptures out of weighted wires and odd materials. In the case of the NCMA installation, they used fake flowers and plastic butterflies to create the 3-dimensional illusion of a jet fighter (the butterflies) and exhaust (the flowers). The result was a captivating, humongous sculpture that took me a minute to understand what it was. Thank god for the plaque that the museum provided!
